My Antibodies have Dropped

To be clear, I have no proven recipe for reducing antibodies in autoimmune diseases. Yet, the development of my values is so remarkable that I at least want to describe what I do for my thyroid.

The slightly fluctuating values for TSH, free T3, and free T4 were and remain within the reference range and are not a cause for concern.

The antibody measurement values were, for example, originally as follows (14 May 2024):

My doctor has always emphasised the importance of nutrients in treatment. The diseased thyroid should receive a regular and consistent supply. For years, I therefore took Thyreo-in-Form from FormMed (Germany), in addition to astaxanthin to address inflammation. Later, when I experienced hair loss and thinning hair, I added iodine, which improved my hair situation, and my hair returned to being as thick and strong as before (see “Hashimoto, iodine, natural hormones and probiotics” on this blog).

Later, I switched to Sanaponte Mental Fit, as this product contained more nutrients, to be taken in the morning and evening. However, I noticed that the selenium content was below 200 µg (only 55 µg), so I added Selenioform 100+ plus L-glutathione (100 µg) to at least approach the 200 µg mark. According to my GP, “studies” had shown that selenium could lead to a reduction in antibodies.

For taking my tablets that are not included in the Sanaponte package, I use a pill organizer divided by days and times, morning and evening, so that I only need to fill all the tablets for the entire week once a week.

Tyrosine and iodine are essential for the production of thyroid hormones. In addition, I believe that gut health is of utmost importance.

In the meantime, after further research, my daily routine looks as follows:

Morning:

the corresponding Sanaponte packet
Dr Wolz Darmflora plus select intensiv probiotics (2–3 times per week)
Astaxanthin capsule, initially every day, currently 2–3 times per week (most effective against free radicals, strongly anti-inflammatory)
Ferro Sanol duodenal mite (iron), once per week
D-Form 20,000 K2+ (vitamin D), 1–2 times per week from autumn until the end of spring
Selenioform 100+ plus L-glutathione (selenium), 1 capsule every morning
NatuRise algae oil or krill oil (Omega-3; the algae oil contains rosemary and is not suitable for simultaneous intake with homeopathic remedies)
Cuproform 2+ (2.0 mg bioavailable copper citrate)

First, I take my thyroid tablet with water on an empty stomach, then wait at least 30 minutes before having breakfast.

One small glass of carrot juice with two teaspoons of rock salt brine and one drop of iodine (5% Lugol’s solution; one drop contains 6.5 mg iodine). According to the reference values, this is still too much, although when my hair was beginning to thin out, I even took 10 drops daily! I realise now that I completely overshot. However, the warning that this would worsen my thyroid values did not prove true.

There are still doctors who advise their Hashimoto's patients to avoid iodine, even though thyroid hormones cannot be produced without it. Consequently, Sanaponte and FormMed have not added iodine to their supplements. This perspective beginning to change only very slowly.

A smoothie, preferably with banana or avocado, made with cashew milk, flaxseeds, psyllium husks, shredded coconut, and leaves from various flavor-compatible herbs from the balcony (chickweed, immortelle, milk thistle, clover, nasturtium, mint, ground ivy, basil, oregano, etc.).

When taking homeopathic remedies, one must avoid medicinal herbs such as mint.

A black tea with milk and one teaspoon of coconut oil. (By the way, I also use coconut oil for skin care.)

Possibly an egg.

Occasionally, later, a bread roll.

Evening:

The corresponding Sanaponte packet (contains fish oil, among other things, so again Omega-3)

L-tryptophan 500 mg, e.g., Zein Pharma
Cuproform 2+ (2.0 mg bioavailable copper citrate)

Taken with yogurt, a few peanuts, a drink, or similar. Unfortunately, I cannot swallow the large capsules with just water, so I take them with something more solid, like soup.

Peanuts are the only plant-based food that contains tyrosine. Otherwise, I also like to eat some cheese, which also contains tyrosine.

In the past, I would also take a tea in the evening or during the day with 1 teaspoon of coconut oil. At the moment, I find this too fatty, so I only do it once a day.

In my opinion, coconut oil and especially omega-3 oils may have contributed to the considerable improvement of my values, as these oils can coat the intestinal wall—something no supplement can achieve. However, one should not overdo this either, since taking coconut oil can actually raise blood lipid levels slightly.

NEW: I now replace sugar with glycine or, alternatively, yacon syrup.

Previously, I had used xylitol, but this is not only highly toxic and potentially fatal for dogs, it may also be unhealthy for humans. According to the Berlin Charité, xylitol in high concentrations can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack by causing platelet aggregation. In the past, I tried using stevia from a health food store, but I noticed that even tiny amounts caused me very strong stomach discomfort.

Both glycine and yacon syrup require only a teaspoon tip of sweetener for a large tea mug. I have a small spoon for measuring sugar, which I fill halfway with glycine powder. No more than that, otherwise it becomes too sweet! Both sweeteners are pleasant and have not caused any issues so far.

As a useful alternative, the above-mentioned newspaper article recommends licorice root, dates, ripe bananas, inulin (for gut flora), vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa, yacon root (as powder or syrup; supports gut flora, weight management, diabetes, bone health, antioxidative and anti-cancer effects), glycine (detoxification, collagen formation, sleep quality, brain rejuvenation), tagatose (prebiotic, sugar blocker, supports healthy blood lipids, dental protection, potentially anti-cancer), galactose (potentially anti-cancer, suitable for dementia and insulin resistance since its metabolism is independent of insulin), and mannose (potentially anti-cancer). It is therefore worth exploring this topic in more detail.

I have also recently discovered apple cider vinegar for myself. It is recommended to drink two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, optionally sweetened with a little honey. I am trying it without honey, but I expect that apple cider vinegar, due to its nutrients and properties, could also have a positive effect on the gut microbiome.

Cancer – Given up on by conventional medicine

Some time ago, Gemma contacted the homeopathy group “Homeopathy Worked for Me,” which I administer, and posted a video she had made many years earlier. In this video, she described how, as a young person in the 1990s, she was sent “home” —or to a hospice— to die because of an inoperable brain tumor. This situation was coincidentally brought to the attention of a homeopath through another patient, who casually remarked that she might be able to help. The end result was that Gemma is still alive today and now works as a homeopath herself in England. You can find the video,

Shortly afterward, I learned about Dr Wurster, who worked at the homeopathic clinic in Orselina, Switzerland, treating cancer patients who had been dismissed by conventional medicine and advised to settle their affairs before they would pass. His results were documented by Freiburg University Clinic. Dr Wurster has written several books on this subject. Given his dire situation, the homeopath, Dr Diez, initially only intended to treat the patient palliatively, but the patient has remained alive 7 years later and still works as a judge.

One would think that common sense forbade the profoundly dubious and scientifically unsubstantiated assumption that terminally ill cancer patients could suddenly be cured by some kind of “placebo effect”—an “effect” that supposedly occurs only when “miraculous little white pellets” are involved, and that seems to occur nowhere else in medicine, certainly not in conventional medicine. Rather, homeopathy not only works; these patients even owe their lives to it. If a patient is still treatable by conventional medicine, homeopathy focuses on reducing the side effects of chemotherapy. This allows patients to benefit more from chemotherapy. In any case, when dealing with cancer, it is always worth bringing in classical homeopathy.

According to reports from around the world, remarkable recoveries from chronic illnesses are also seen precisely where conventional medicine is unable to achieve anything. Many insights and research currently come from India—on the one hand because homeopathy is repeatedly under attack in Europe, and on the other because funding for research in Europe is expensive.

Homeopathic remedies act on the body as long as it is able to respond to them. But even the transition to death can be accompanied homeopathically. I have read reports according to which a patient became conscious once more and said goodbye to their loved ones before passing away peacefully, while in another case—despite the relatives gathering and firmly expecting death to be imminent—the time had not yet come for the person after the remedy was given.

So much for “nothing in it” and “placebo effect”!

Occasionally, patients experience what is called an initial aggravation after taking a homeopathic remedy. This is definitely not a pleasant experience and is never the same for any remedy. I will return to this topic later when I share my own experiences.

So what causes initial aggravations if, due to “dilution,” there’s supposedly nothing in homeopathic remedies? Spoiler alert: if remedies were indeed just diluted continually, this statement would, in fact, be correct. Through dilution alone, there would soon be no molecules left in the liquids. You would not have made a homeopathic remedy and would not achieve any effect.

Several research projects in India have, however, proven that nanoparticles of the respective initial substances are present in homeopathically diluted and succussed high potencies, which suggests that an association of molecules into higher-order structures occurs during the manufacturing process.

Furthermore, an effect of the homeopathic remedies Hydrastis canadensis and Marsdenia condurango on a human cell line, the so-called HeLa cells, has been found. The homeopathic remedies induced epigenetic modifications in vitro and altered the gene expression profiles of the cells. This human cell line was originally taken from a woman—mind you, against her will. While she is no longer alive herself, her cells continue to circulate in research and are still used in research experiments.

Experiments have also shown that homeopathic remedies act on plants and have, in the meantime, been applied in the field. While this, of course, no longer corresponds to classical homeopathy, further experiences are continually being gathered.

My own experiences with homeopathy

I should begin by saying that I don’t turn to homeopathic remedies for every futility. For colds, minor infections, and the like, I give my body the rest it apparently needs. In addition, there are medicinal herbs with antibacterial and antiviral properties, as well as salt rinses, which are also antiviral.

In the mid-1990s, in my twenties, I began writing newspaper articles for a weekly magazine as a side job. At that time, I was suddenly struck by chronic, agonising stomach pain, which a doctor treated with acid blockers. My problem worsened dramatically. I would vomit several times every night, and in the morning, I would have red spots all over my face from burst blood vessels. A specialist considered the possibility that I might have cancer. My entire esophagus up to the pancreas was severely inflamed. Fortunately, he was able to reassure me shortly afterward that it wasn't cancer.

That was the situation when, in a casual conversation, someone recommended a doctor to me and suggested I try homeopathy. I contacted the doctor to write a newspaper article about homeopathy, about which I did not have the slightest idea.

When I arrived there on a Sunday, he told me about remedies that needed to be diluted and succussed, and about the problem of people drinking coffee. I happened to mention in passing that my grandmother had died of stomach cancer at the age of 35. Beyond that, I was confused by his descriptions and actually thought about leaving. Then, however, I wouldn’t be able to write my article. And after all, the man was a general practitioner.

So instead, I agreed that he should treat me and followed him into his office. There was a computer with MacRepertory software, and he began asking me peculiar questions, which I answered to the best of my knowledge. In the end, he discarded the results from his computer software in favor of Carcinosinum 30C, because I had told him about my grandmother.

Three days later, all of my stomach pain had vanished, I had strength and energy, and my feet, which had always collapsed inward, straightened out. Without hesitation, I vehemently stood up for myself when someone who was in the wrong—a side of myself I had never known before.

Then I went to a Christmas market and happened to buy some anise sweets. The following day, all the homeopathic “magic” had disappeared. I was tired and down again, and the weakness and pain returned as if nothing had ever happened. When I called, the homeopath exclaimed in surprise: “The remedy was supposed to act for three months!” More on this later under Antidotes. A repetition of the remedy quickly restored my good condition. I consider myself lucky that, at that time, I happened to have toothpaste without mint or menthol and no shower gel with a “refreshing” scent. Otherwise, these substances would have immediately negated the effect of the homeopathic remedy, and I would never have experienced the effects of homeopathy.

The second time, on this path paved with coincidences, homeopathy proved its effectiveness during a viral infection. I had almost 40°C (104°F) fever. It was a Thursday. The homeopath used his MacRepertory software with the baseline information from our previous meeting. At the end of the consultation, Belladonna was at the top. He gave me a sick note until the weekend. I thought, great, then I’ll be back on Monday because the sick note will need to be extended. I received the 30C potency and lay down at home. Most of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday was spent in bed, sleeping. On Sunday, I opened my eyes, jumped out of bed, and went to the kitchen, where I noticed some dust in a corner, so I fetched the dustpan. Only then did I realise that I was truly completely healthy again. There were no gradual improvements, as one might expect; rather, all symptoms—sore throat, runny nose, cough, and fever—were GONE all at once! I was stunned!

When I moved, I left my homeopath, although we spoke on the phone. My stomach problem had not completely been under control in the long term, but today I have no complaints and have not taken any acid blockers since the 1990s.

As a third example, I would like to add my chronic, agonising pain caused by scoliosis, which, thanks to five globules of Pulsatilla in 200C potency, has disappeared by well over 90% and is comparatively mild for the rest of the time.

Tuberkulinum and Sulphur allowed an atopic eczema to heal with a tingling sensation, which my general practitioner had only modestly improved with cortisone. She was able to witness the healing herself.

When slipping on ice, I unfortunatly broke my arm. I declined the painkillers prescribed by the orthopaedic specialist, which came with a pill for stomach protection—keyword: stomach—and instead chose Arnica D30. This low potency actually has to be taken every day. I chose this option because, at least, I wanted to be able to drink coffee while being stuck at home. One can rarely compare one's condition with and without a homeopathic remedy. With Arnica, I was entirely pain-free. Indeed, I felt so well that I thought I didn’t need the little pellets at all and skipped them in the morning. That night, however, I was unable to sleep and experienced severe pain from the fracture. I immediately took my pellets again, and by the morning, the remedy had taken effect again, leaving me pain-free. Similarly, I got through a tooth extraction wonderfully with Arnica, experiencing hardly any pain despite heavy bleeding.

Initial aggravation / reactions

As mentioned earlier, homeopathic remedies can trigger reactions, initial aggravation, or proving symptoms. This also depends on the potency chosen. In seriously ill individuals, one wants to avoid these side effects. They don’t bother me, because they show clearly that something is happening. In the following, I would like to describe, by way of example, some remedies and my own experiences with initial aggravation.

Hydrastis: The repertory already speaks of “a great deal of mucus.” When I first took the remedy, I was completely healthy. The next morning I woke up with my frontal and nasal sinuses completely clogged with mucus. Everything was totally “blocked,” and breathing was only possible through my mouth. Fortunately, after three days this ordeal was over. Truly drastic.

Sulphur: Sulphur is a slowly and deeply acting remedy. The 200C potency unfortunately caused, as an initial reaction, a week of pressing headaches above the eyes and stabbing headaches at the temples. In the second week, I “only” had pressing headaches above the eyes. After that, the initial worsening was over.

Pulsatilla: First dose: I merely had an urge to bend in the opposite direction of the scoliosis. Since then, the agonising back pain has disappeared. My scoliosis is congenital and, of course, is still present. Only the pain has been taken from me.

Second dose, years later, of the “swaying” remedy, as I now know: The middle finger of my right hand swole over the course of a morning, went down again, swole again, went down again, swole again and turned red, and then subsided once more. In the afternoon, I couldn’t make a fist with the fingers of my left hand; they were stiff. This symptom lasted a quarter of an hour.

Third dose: Having moved to another home, which was very strenuous, I actually began to feel my back again. After taking the remedy, initially, there was a massive increase in back pain. I could hardly walk. A few days later, this was followed by alternating pain, swaying between the upper left and the lower right side of my back, which changed about every 20 minutes. After about two weeks, the swaying slowly came to a standstill, and I was restored. Pulsatilla has, so far, been the only remedy that, despite repeated doses, caused an aggravation reaction — and of a completely different nature each time.

All aggravation reactions are physical in nature, and so far I have not yet experienced reactions that were the same for two remedies. Patients who are unfamiliar with homeoptahy could be unsettled by the clearly perceptible symptoms. They certainly do not arise from any kind of “placebo effect.”

Antidotes

As mentioned above, there are substances that antidote homeopathic remedies, i.e., cancel out their effect. Homeopathic remedies can have varying antidotes. As a rule of thumb, the following substances neutralise homeopathic remedies:

Coffee and dark chocolate, because they contain natural caffeine. However, in the past I have been able to drink black tea without any problems.

All kinds of medicinal herbs, the leaves/needles of coniferous trees (spruce, fir, pine), mint, camphor, and menthol. The Christmas season is not a good time to take homeopathy. However, medicinal herbs also often find their way into the kitchen.

My omega-3 algae oil contains rosemary, so when I take a homeopathic remedy I have to switch to krill oil. Many oral disinfectants contain mint, which is also administered by the dentist.

Medicinal herbs, mint, camphor, or menthol can also be found in personal care products and toothpaste.

So far, we haven't discovered yet why the substances mentioned above can antidote homeopathic remedies. These are merely observations, just as the effects of homeopathic remedies were once observations, before it was discovered what is “in them” and that they have an effect on humans, animals, and plants.

Last but not least, homeopathic remedies can also antidote other homeopathic remedies. Therefore, one should not take multiple remedies together. Sometimes, in severe cases, a homeopath decides to give two remedies simultaneously. Q potencies are taken in a different manner compared to C or D potencies.

The homeopathic repertorisation process

Let’s assume you have a headache. A pharmaceutical manufacturer promises quick relief for all types of headaches. You take the tablets, and your symptoms disappear. With repeated use, however, you could be affected by the side effects of the medication. In addition, the headaches could return within a few days. You therefore see a specialist to clarify the situation. Fortunately, your specialist finds risy causes—that is, no tumor, clot, or aneurysm. This step is essential to ensure your safety, and homeopathy cannot replace necessary surgical interventions.

Back in Hahnemann’s days, the so-called “conventional medicine” was bizarre and speculative, and would often harm patients or even cost them their lives. Today, of course, this is no longer the case. Moreover, consulting a homeopath by no means prevents you from also seeing other specialists who can investigate your problem further.

You consult a homeopath with your medical history and tell them what the specialist said.

The homeopath first asks about your general medical history and that of your parents—for example, whether cancer or any other disease occurs frequently in your family, just as an example.

This is followed by an assessment of your symptoms. The homeopath will now ask about the exact nature of your pain, where and when it occurs, under what circumstances it appears, and whether there are times or places where the pain improves. And it doesn’t stop there. Further symptoms and conditions of your body and psyche are also considered. Some homeopaths work from experience, others use punch cards, and still others use software, such as MacRepertory. The goal is to find a remedy that matches you as precisely as possible, taking into account all your symptoms, conditions, and individual characteristics.

One could compare it to a pair of glasses that has already been made. The remedy has its spectrum of action—certain unalterable properties. The patient requires a specific prescription, certain values and parameters, and the goal is to find glasses that fit the patient as precisely as possible, so they can get along well—similarly to how donated glasses are fitted in Africa.

For another patient who also has “headaches,” these circumstances are of an entirely different nature, and they receive, despite sharing the same conventional medical diagnosis, a different remedy that has been carefully repertorised for them. In homeopathy, there is no single remedy for all patients with “headaches.” Even the detailed assessment of the type of “headache” alone necessitates different remedies. And this fact, that in homeopathy there cannot be one remedy for everyone and a placebo for the control group, is exploited, somewhat unimaginatively, by opponents of homeopathy. More on this below.

Miasms

The illnesses and ailments of the ancestors lead to illnesses and ailments in their descendants. That is what homeopathy means by the term “miasm.” Today, through genetics, we know that this is correct. Hahnemann classified his miasms according to the diseases he was able to observe in his time.

Here is a brief classification of the different miasms:

Psora: The basic miasm, associated with scabies, inflammation, and functional disorders; deficiency

Sycosis: Fig-wart disease (genital warts), chronic inflammatory processes; excess

Syphilitic miasm: Syphilis; destruction; on an emotional level, suicide

Tubercular miasm (introduced after Hahnemann): Pseudopsora, a mixed hereditary miasm between sycosis and syphilitic miasm
Cancer miasm (introduced in the 1980s): Cancer

Due to the dilution process, homeopathic remedies contain nothing; everything relies solely on the placebo effect.

Anecdotal evidence

Homeopathy represents a financial burden on the general public due to its lack of effectiveness. Health insurance companies should not reimburse it.

The aim is to push the value of the “sugar pellets” toward that of sweets, which can be made in any which way one choses. The remedies would then no longer hold the status of professionally manufactured medication, and patients could no longer receive advice on homeopathic remedies in the pharmacy (assuming the pharmacist is well-informed about homeopathy). This also aligns with the claim that globules contain “a lot of sugar.” The lactose is merely the carrier for the remedy, and taking five globules every three months as part of a long-term treatment for a serious illness—or for other patients, going several years without any homeopathy because it is not needed—should hardly be a problem. You just eat one less biscuit in the afternoon.
It is clear that manufacturers of homeopathy produce homeopathic remedies. This can hardly be compared to the conventional pharmaceutical industry.

For finding the correct remedy, diagnoses from conventional medicine are indispensable.
Homeopathic practices save, with equal or better therapeutic outcomes compared to conventional medicine, 50% on medications and 20% on costs.

The patient’s symptoms can be assigned to the different miasms, as can the homeopathic remedies. If one knows which miasm the patient is in, this provides clues as to the order in which the patient’s conditions should be treated—from the more complex miasms toward psora, and furthermore from the inside of the body outward.

The constitutional remedy is the remedy that generally—especially on an emotional level—matches the patient best, rather than being focused only on the symptoms of a particular illness. In homeopathy, various remedies have emerged that often are constitutional remedies.

The arguments of "homeopathy opponents"

Even back then, when I first encountered homeopathy in the mid-1990s, there were interest groups that persistently spread claims that no effect of homeopathy could be detected anywhere and that it allwas based solely on the placebo effect. With the help of the internet and especially social networks, such false claims gain considerable reach. The word “pseudoscientific” is meant to push homeopathy and homeopaths into the realm of quackery. Yet “homeopathy opponents” have homed in on a few false claims, some of which I would like to address.

It does not exactly fit the agenda of "homeopathy opponents” that research has actually detected ingredients in high potency homeopathic remedies as well as proven effects on human cells. Homeopathy works on humans, animals, and plants. Above all, human cell lines in vitro are unlikely to be impressed by any placebo effect—plants, likewise, are not influenced by a placebo. Homeopathy cures serious and chronic illnesses and, as we have seen above, allows seriously ill patients—who had been given up on by conventional medicine—to continue living. This cannot be reconciled with the effect of any kind of placebo.

Moreover, the pharmaceutical industry operates daily under the premise that, in studies, the placebo group shows no—or at least no significant—effect, unlike the group receiving the actual drug, in order to demonstrate that the drug produces the desired effect while the placebo does not.

Since opponents of homeopathy have no arguments against the research evidence provided, it is simply ignored, and the claim persists that there is “nothing in” homeopathic remedies.

This statement refers to the fact that in homeopathy, every patient must be individually repertorised, and therefore there is no group of people with “headaches” who are all treated with the same homeopathic remedy. Thus, the healing and recovery of the patient is considered a unique case and is allegedly attributed to chance—they may have regained their health on their own. At best, the friendly approach of the homeopath and the dedicated attention may have activated the placebo effect and caused the patient to recover. Conventional doctors never have time for such things and also always lack compassion for their sick patients. And in the case of the British woman mentioned above, this has already worked for decades!

Not reproducible

Once again, they take advantage of the fact that in homeopathy every patient must be repertorised individually. There is no group receiving one remedy while the other receives a placebo. Such an experiment would also need to be reproducible in order to demonstrate the effect of a remedy. In homeopathy, a patient can only be treated or not treated. In any case, their individual remedy must be found.

Healed on its own: The severe, life-threatening, chronical (or terminal) illness has healed on its own in a miraculous way. Reasons for this astonishing development can, of course, not be stated.

Homeopathic remedies are not regulated and do not have to prove their effectiveness.

The effect that, according to the “opponents to homeopathy,” would need to be proven is again based on the concept of “one remedy for all who have headaches,” knowing fully well that homeopathy does not work that way.

The German Green Party recently followed this false claim, coming from a “homeopathy opponent” within their own ranks, along with the nonsense about the placebo effect supposedly being activated by the homeopath’s attention to their patient. A doctor who practices homeopathy receives only the basic fee for each patient that they are entitled to for the examination and consultation. Therefore, patients make additional payments for homeopathy—drumroll please—out of their own pockets! A very small number of health insurances pay a modest subsidy. For these patients, the insurers make significant savings, since they fall ill less often—see the link below. Most homeopaths in this country, however, are private practitioners whom patients pay entirely themselves, unless they have taken out a corresponding insurance policy for alternative treatments (not just homeopathy). I had such a policy myself for a short time. The insurance premiums ended up roughly balancing out the costs for the homeopath.

Homeopathic remedies should no longer be available in pharmacies

Manufacturers of homeopathic remedies also belong to the “pharmaceutical industry”.

Homeopathy is risky because it prevents life-saving conventional medical treatment.

Nothing could be further from the truth. More on this in the outlook.

Who are the people fighting against homopathy?

In my opinion, this is about eliminating the competition. Even back then, “conventional medicine” sent people to “take care of” Hahnemann by attempting to disprove him. Instead, these doctors and scientists of the time joined him and made important substantive contributions to homeopathy.

Today’s opponents of homeopathy comprise a comparatively small number of specialists or GPs, scientists, graduates of unrelated fields, and even astroturfing troll groups that don’t even need a basic school diploma to participate. The “leaders” of such groups usually have some form of higher education. In any case, medical knowledge or good English skills—which would be needed to read and understand medical journal articles—are not a requirement. I’ve also noticed that members of these groups often operate multiple profiles on social networks, creating the appearance of a larger following.

Astroturfing trolls recite their “arguments,” statements, and disparagements against homeopathy across multiple countries. I have encountered exactly the same statements and content in at least German, English, French, and Spanish. On one occasion, a user commented that Brazil “also has the problem with homeopathy” [because it is recognised there]. If neutral users were simply expressing their opinions, they would never consistently produce exactly the same statements delivered according to a pattern.

A curious case among the opponents of homeopathy is a professor working in England and self-proclaimed opponent of homeopathy, who admitted in an interview in front of homeopaths that he had no qualification as a homeopath when he allegedly worked as one in a Munich hospital—until he was supposedly struck by a sudden revelation and realised that homeopathy did not work. In Germany, there is a physician who experienced a similar “conversion” and now campaigns for the abolition of homeopathy. In addition, there are a few other doctors and scientists, mostly active online, who occasionally—or as needed—also echo the arguments and statements of the trolls.

Journalists also seem eager to deliver repeated blows to homeopathy in newspapers and on television, often relying on the trolls’ arguments. The current state of homeopathy research seems to be irrelevant —something that should never happen to a professional journalist committed to the truth. In any case, it should be noted that newspapers, struggling to survive due to a lack of subscribers, receive financial support through advertisements from the pharmaceutical industry. So, is this a case of “He who pays the piper calls the tune"?

Another aspect is AIs. When hundreds of people worldwide spam the internet with false claims about homeopathy, AIs simply repeat them. AIs are unaware of the current state of research, do not read reports from homeopaths or studies on homeopathy that confirm its effectiveness, and therefore do not question the statements.

At the same time, homeopaths consider using an AI to help them repertorise patients in the future. After all, software like MacRepertory already exists. However, none of these tools can replace the experience and skill of a homeopath.

Homeopathy is practiced by medical specialists, GPs, and licenced CAM practitioners. Their number likely far exceeds that of medical opponents of homeopathy. In Austria, for example, the profession of a licenced CAM practitioner does not exist. Homeopaths are therefore general practitioners and medical specialists, many with professorial titles. It is unreasonable to accuse these professionals of quackery.

Justified criticism of homeopathy

Some examples: In Hahnemann’s time, it was believed that masturbation caused illness, and indeed, this circumstance was assigned as a supposed cause of some symptoms. Some homeopaths therefore argue that all repertories should be updated to reflect the latest medical knowledge, while others are adamant about not changing these historical entries at all. However, today’s homeopaths generally know which entries can safely be ignored, and fortunately, they usually operate on well-established paths.

Atopic eczema, for example, is included in Boericke’s repertory. It was formerly called “neurodermatitis” because it was thought to be somehow nerve-related. Someone has therefore updated this term.

Rosacea, on the other hand, is not found in the repertories and is also difficult to locate in online references. One might try to approach it via the precise description of the pustules and the relevant miasms in order to find a remedy. This may be because the underlying cause of rosacea is not definitively known.

In principle, Hahnemann, his fellow homeopaths, and immediate successors established almost the entirety of homeopathy. Therefore, there was very little left for later homeopaths to discover. Yet, homeopathy has obviously not remained at a standstill since Hahnemann’s days. Classical homeopathy operates according to the principle that “like cures like”. Most classical homeopathic remedies are originally toxic, and some are even potentially lethal. There are a few that are edible and can be used in their original form. Examples include the edible daisy (Bellis perennis, BellP) or arnica, which is used not only homeopathically but also as a medicinal herb in a very similar way. Most classical homeopathic remedies are of plant origin, some of animal origin, others mineral, and a few nosodes as well.

With newer developments, however, remedies have been introduced that no longer are classical homeopathic remedies.

Now, some homeopathic remedies are intended to induce a “rebalancing” in the body, including employing a principle that "same cures same".

The Indian homeopath Sankaran has introduced new miasms, relevant to India. His repertorisation of remedies no longer corresponds to Hahnemann’s method, but rather is based on metaphorical, emotion-based considerations, which have brought in a large number of animal remedies. The remedy "Berlin Wall", for example, is clearly given due to the energy it represents. From a material point of view, it only consists of concrete and stones.
In my opinion, a slow progress is warranted here, and these new remedies should be subjected to repeated testing.

In training, homeopathy students take classical homeopathic remedies of a safe potency in order to observe the effects themselves. Only afterwards do they learn which remedy it was and can look it up in the repertory. In this way, classical homeopathic remedies are not only applied to patients, but have been repeatedly tested and verified over decades and centuries.

If the correct remedy for the patient is not found, the patient won't benefit. If the patient does not avoid substances that antidote homeopathic remedies, the effects of the remedies will be neutralised. In the worst case, the patient will turn away after their first experience and later post on Facebook that they saw a homeopath, but nothing happened.

These contain, for example for colds, a mixture of different homeopathic remedies. Since no one “repertorises” the patient to find the correct remedy for that individual, it helps some people by chance and others not at all.

X potencies: Some practitioners have apparently not internalised the principle of usually prescribing a single remedy—or at most two in severe illnesses—nor the use of high potencies. Instead, the patient is given an entire arsenal of low X potencies, with all sorts of little pellets to be taken morning, noon, and night. That’s not how homeopathy works.

Naturopathic treatments

In Germany, medical doctors are allowed to put up a “naturopathic treatments” sign at their practice after attending a few lectures on the various topics. They are therefore not experienced and trained homeopaths. This may also apply to other naturopathic methods that they do not master properly. When in doubt, one should turn to a homeopath who has beem trained in classical homeopathy.

Basically, a homeopath has to make a preliminary selection. A classical homeopath would then ask in more detail about various symptoms until reaching a conclusion. The kinesiologist, on the other hand, places a little bottle into your hand, which you are supposed to hold next to your ear with one hand while they press against your other arm, in order to determine—based on your unconscious muscle strength—which remedy is supposed to be the right one. So the perceived muscle strength decides on the correct remedy. That didn’t work for me. Fortunately, I already knew homeopathy well enough at the time not to be put off by it.

Anyone who uses a pendulum for repertorization—please don’t! The movement of the pendulum caused by the pulse in the thumb is not a good basis for deciding on a remedy.

Outlook

Homeopathy has a very strong justification within alternative medicine. No other alternative method is nearly as effective. Cancer patients who have been given up on by conventional medicine owe their lives to it. Other serious and chronic illnesses can be cured or at least significantly improved.

Homeopathy is an observational science that has grown and become established over centuries. Homeopathic remedies are very inexpensive and cost only a fraction of a cent, so they hardly matter at all. This is especially true when the homeopath dispenses the remedies directly to the patient. The homeopaths themselves will also not issue very high bills, so homeopathy is affordable for all patients.

Homeopaths work together with conventional medical doctors. Due to its nature, homeopathy can be used for almost all illnesses. Antidotes to homeopathy include, among other, caffeine and medicinal plants. Accordingly, conventional medications generally will not impair homeopathy, and vice versa, homeopathy does not impair conventional medicine either, so patients can use both conventional medicine and homeopathy.

In view of the effectiveness of homeopathy, I consider it unconscionable to spread deliberate defamatory and false information about it, because affected patients are thereby prevented from learning that homeopathy can restore their health and save their lives.

It's a Dog's Life - International Animal Rescue

Dogs serve in many roles around the world: working with police and customs, aiding in rescue missions during earthquakes or avalanches, acting as assistance and guide dogs, and more recently, contributing even to medicine by detecting certain diseases through their sense of smell.

However, there is also a darker side.

While making her evening rounds on the property, the animal rescuer hears a sound she knows all too well. Yet, the German animal rescue organisation would never keep any young puppies outside, especially not during the harsh Romanian winter. Someone had, indeed, thrown puppies, along with their mother, over the fence. In the glow of her i-phone's flashlight, tiny eyes glimmer in the darkness. Four little puppies cautiously approach her.

Just a few months earlier, a similar incident had taken place. The puppies had barely been the size of a hand, and without someone witnessing the event and raising the alarm, they would have died overnight. Their chances of survival were slim, without their mother, and especially so soon after birth. Fortunately, a bitch and her puppies had just been rescued from a public shelter. Since the bitches' puppies were old enough to switch to starter food, she was able to care for the new little foundlings. All of them survived.

Atrocities
Not only do pet owners, often due to poverty, dispose of their unwanted, sick, or injured dogs and cats, but many countries also face a significant problem with uncontrolled breeding of strays. Various European animal rescues work in countries such as Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Lithuania, the Balkans, but also Spain, Italy, and Greece, and even Russia. More recently, Turkey has come into focus. The government there has passed a law allowing for the "euthanasia" of strays, raising fears that it will pave the way for animal cruelty and arbitrary killings of dogs and cats using all manner of - cheaper - methods, including live burials. This has sparked protests, both in Turkey and Germany.

The Russian war against Ukraine has left many pets homeless for obvious reasons, while rescuers risk their own lives to save animals from danger. World-wide, animal rescue organisations also fight against the consumption of dog meat in countries where eating dogs is a common practice.

The payment per dog reinforces the system
In Romania, stray and abandoned animals may be caught by dog catchers and taken to so-called "public shelters." Both the dog catchers and the operators of public or private shelters receive a set amount of money from the government for each dog. It follows that this amount is reduced if the dogs are provided with food and water or taken to the vet. As a result, corners are cut, leading to situations where, in some shelters, emaciated dogs languish in their cages, fierce fights erupt over small amounts of food available, the water in makeshift plastic containers is dirty and overrun with algae, and there is no shelter from the cold or heat in the open enclosures and buildings with bare floors. Furthermore, no animals receive veterinary care for their illnesses. However, registered animal rescue organisations can save these dogs from such dire conditions. According to the latest regulations, these animals must then be neutered by the shelter, unless they are too old or too ill. Transfer documents had already been in place before.

Severe Injuries and Illnesses
Animal rescues take dogs to the vet, using donated funds, where they receive treatment, undergo surgery for injuries, are vaccinated, and, in the case of dogs rescued from the streets, are also neutered. The stories of these animals are often heartbreaking, especially for those who perceive them as living, feeling beings. One dog was hit by a train, losing a leg, an ear, and its tail in the accident, and wandering about in confusion. Dogs and cats are - sometimes deliberately - run over, and left with severe open wounds in filthy ditches. Car accidents and beatings with sticks and rods often lead to paralysis for both dogs and cats. One particularly tragic case involved a cat that had a kitchen knife stuck in her abdomen. She survived and was later rehomed in Germany. It is all too common for dogs to suffer injuries from bites by larger dogs in overcrowded kennels - the barred enclosures, where they are housed - and, left without medical attention, to ultimately perish from their untreated wounds.

Romanian veterinarians treat severe injuries on a daily basis and address all illnesses animals may have, including cancer. Distemper and parvovirus are widespread in the shelters, so there's never a guarantee that all the puppies believed to be saved will survive, which is why new puppies must always be housed separately. Locals use metal to burn their dogs' noses above the nostrils, supposedly as protection against distemper. Take them to the vet for vaccinations? No such luck! Babesiosis, spread by ticks and recognisable by pale gums, causes the destruction of red blood cells in dogs, leading to anemia and, if untreated—or sometimes even with treatment—death.

Daily Challenges

Without donations to provide food, veterinary care, and eventually transportation for adoption to countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the UK, Ireland or other nations—or for adoption within their country of origin—animal protection organisations would be unable to help the animals. In addition to this, there are challenges to be faced on their own fronts. One German animal protection organisation operating in Romania, for example, has to reestablish their structures because the lease for the property they currently use is likely to be terminated soon. A new property has already been purchased, but the first priorities now are to set up a fence and gate, adding gravel for the driveway, pouring concrete, and later raising funds for the kennels themselves. Another animal protection group has to rebuild their kennels after flooding destroyed all their structures. In Turkey, it is not even remotely possible to house and care for all strays. Here, an even more horrifying issue comes to light—cases of sexual abuse of dogs. And for all rescue organisations, money is in short supply.

Due to the sheer number of animals in need, animal rescue organisations unintentionally compete with one another for donations and adopters. Some animal rescue groups cooperate with their own private foster homes and rescue centres, while others work with public animal shelters abroad that reserve animals, train and care for them before placing them in their forever homes.

Some animal rescue organisations have not established any support structures in their respective adoption countries. If an adopter struggles with their dog, the only option for them is often to dump the dog at the local animal shelter. German animal shelters are operating at capacity, as they are still caring for and rehoming dogs that were acquired during the COVID-19 pandemic and have since become unwanted. As a result, some shelters, including Cologne-Dellbrück Animal Shelter, are advocating that dogs from abroad should only be placed in foster homes initially.

In contrast, other organisations are well-prepared in this regard, with rescue centres and foster homes at their disposal. Several animal rescue groups travel through Romanian villages with their own vehicles to neuter animals. A clinic has even been established near a Romanian public shelter, where pet owners can have their animals neutered free of charge. However, it was not the EU that made this possible, which appears to take no stance on the welfare of stray animals. Instead, this project was implemented through private donations from many individuals. Without neutering, there is no way to reduce the flood of puppies and the associated suffering. This is clear to everyone. And it stands in stark contrast to a system that profits from every dog captured and placed in a public shelter.

And then there are those who behave in the exact opposite way. They make money by breeding dogs and selling puppies, including illegally. A particularly striking case currently involves an Austrian puppy mill breeder who has been banned from owning animals in her home country and therefore relocated to Hungary. On her filthy, trash-strewn property, animal rescuers discovered around 200 severely traumatised and neglected dogs. In some areas, they found dead, decaying dogs and skeletal remains scattered around. Thankfully, Facebook doesn’t yet deliver odours along with their videos. The breeder reportedly owns 11 additional properties, which are likely in similarly appalling conditions

For all puppy mill breeders, the well-being of the dogs is a secondary concern. The animals live their lives in small, dark cages, receiving at best a little food and water to keep them from dying immediately. Their sole purpose is to produce puppies, which, unsurprisingly, cannot be healthy, not least due to inbreeding. The sight of such neglected dogs is always heartbreaking; fines, if imposed at all, seem wholly inadequate given the severity of the cruelty.

Adopt, don't shop and donations: Look before you leap

Our cities and parks have become overcrowded. In light of the conditions abroad, many people, including those who are not typically dog lovers, have decided to adopt a dog or cat from animal rescue organisations. When adopting, please make sure that your organisation has a partner organisation in your home country with foster homes to take in animals that need to be rehomed in case something goes wrong. The organisation should be willing to take the animal back if you suddenly become permanently ill and can no longer care for your pet. It’s a nice touch when even retirees are allowed to care for an animal. Not every animal is young. The organisation should be available to assist you long-term. Generally, they will want to carry out pre- and post-adoption checks and place the animals with you under a protection contract.

Please do not buy dogs from puppy mill breeders, whether abroad or at home, even if the puppies look incredibly cute and in need of help. By doing so, you would be supporting a system of cruelty and likely incur high veterinary costs. Former puppy mill breeder dogs that are rehomed through animal rescue organisations usually have not received any training, unless a foster home has taken care of that. You will then need to be able to show the dog everything and teach them what they need to know.

It’s a good idea to follow some animal rescue organisations on social media to get to know the organisations and their methods. Feel free to attend events held by the organisations and their members in your own country and take a look around. Talk to the organisers and the adopters. Do the rescuers have an official permission as dog trainers? What experiences did the adopters have? Are people actively involved in the organisation? Do you like the animal rescuers you’ll be cooperating with during the adoption process?

If you want to donate, it’s best to give the money to animal rescue organisations based in your own country that operate abroad. This way, you can deduct your donation from your taxes. Never donate money to people who simply show you dogs in kennels, with the dogs wanting to get out. As sad as it is, you cannot know whether the situation is actually current or if it’s old footage, whether these are truly emergency cases, and whether the dogs are better off in the care of these people than in a shelter. One negative experience from Romania involved an organisation collecting donations for dogs in the form of sponsorships. In one room, food was piled up, but the dogs weren't fed. This involved about 300 dogs, and the scene was horrifying. Eventually, the operator was fined. As for the dogs that were seized, one can only speculate that they were probably euthanized (I almost said "executed" by mistake). In that case, you would have given your hard-earned money to a fraudster.

Make sure that the organisation is transparent, reports on its activities, and lists its expenses. Are there updates on rescued dogs? Do you receive a response upon inquiry, or do they follow up after inquiries and share updates soon? Do the animal rescuers share their daily routines and what happens during the day?

Do they even go live on social networks? Does the organisation provide information about the behaviour and character of a dog you are considering for adoption, or do they merely state that it's a stray or shelter dog and they don't know? Are you advised regarding your own circumstances and the needs/appropriate size of a dog?

Take your time to consider an adoption, as a dog or cat can accompany you for more than 15 years of your life. Many dogs from abroad will continue to need a home, even in the foreseeable future. Alternatively, you could help an organisation of your choice by donating, selling secondhand items for them, or voting for your organisation in donation competitions, thus enabling them to rescue many dogs.

Preconditions for Animal Rescue Organisations

It is useful to seek organisational allies in your own country. You might be able to join already existing organisational structures. Obtain as many qualifications as possible, such as the official permission as a dog trainer, and ensure that you can issue donation receipts as soon as possible. Work in cooperation with other animal rescue organisations both abroad and domestically. Establish foster homes, points of contact, and rescue centres in your own country. A foster home is one or more people who have space and experience with dogs and their training, who can take in multiple dogs for a limited period of time, work with the dogs on training, and are ideally qualified as dog trainers as well. They are not someone who takes in one of your dogs as a trial to see if they can handle dog ownership in general or living with a specific dog.

Work on building your own structures. If you have to pay rent, hire transport, or depend on external boarding facilities for animals, your costs will be significantly higher than if you have established your own capacities. You may possibly be able to cooperate with other rescue organisations to use capacities together.

Be present on all existing social networks to attract as many people as possible. Post, share reels and lives, and react and respond to comments from your followers. You may need a team to handle answering questions in the background, respond to comments with relevant content, and react to followers' remarks with emoticons. Set up various purpose-specific groups, such as a second-hand sale group, a group for members, and a general public group.

Share what you are doing on a given day and the challenges you face. Let your followers be part of the dogs' lives, whether they need to see a vet or you are rescuing dogs from shelters or the streets. Provide updates. Be transparent and open about your costs.

Accept donations from all possible sources. PayPal donations should be made "to family and friends" to avoid losing money in fees. GoFundMe isn't as effective because a significant portion of the donations is taken as fees. Facebook allows followers to send stars, even though the amounts are small. Participate in Teaming or set up a type of "Teaming" through your own organisation, where many followers contribute just 1-2€ per month. In Germany, followers can also donate small amounts through their phone bill by calling 81190. Perhaps your country offers a similar option. Almost everyone can spare 5€ occasionally. Keep an eye out for annual donation competitions organised by banks or other organisations, where followers can vote for you to participate in a donation payout. Thank each individual for their donation and efforts. Perhaps someone would like to start a second-had items sales group. While this is a more labour-intensive way to raise funds, donations can still be generated through it. Remind your followers of the costs involved with rescues and vet visits and regularly post all donation options with links. Emphasise that even small amounts will be helpful and thank them for giving you money. Generate funds by offering the opportunity to name animals or assuming sponsorships for individual animals. Organise meetups with your followers, adopters and animal rescuers, such as summer parties or Christmas gatherings. With donated coffee and cake, quiches and other foods, merchandise with the organization's logo, and more, you can raise a lot of funds in a single day.

Conclusion

No dog is truly malicious, but they may well be scared and traumatised, which does not come as much of a surprise. The underlying problem, unfortunately, is man-made. Most dogs miraculously open up again when they realise they can trust their humans, despite having been terribly mistreated by people previously.

In the meantime, there is a slow shift in thinking. The focus is gradually and incrasingly being placed on neutering. Locals and the Animal Police (yes, there is such a thing in Romania) are working together with foreign animal rescuers. Some locals even work for animal rescuers and let them use their own land. Shelters are asking rescuers for help when they realise that they need to reduce their number of dogs to avoid ordered euthanasia. Will Autocratic Parties Save Us?

Dr Alice Weidel, German right-wing populist AfD (Alternative for Germany), spoke with Elon Musk on "X." As a result of this conversation, some social media users have claimed that her English was excellent. Many topics were discussed.

Even if we believed that this assessment was correct, it would be utterly ridiculous to assume that good English skills alone qualified Dr Weidel for a political office. There are countless non-native speakers worldwide with excellent English skills who can comprehend texts, articles, books, and documents and are fluent in their spoken expression.

What is truly needed, however, are politicians capable of assessing global issues and developments with prudence and realism in this challenging and complex situation. These abilities and skills are, to my mind, entirely lacking in the AfD. On the contrary, this party relies heavily on polarising and provocative rhetoric, which does little to calm tensions on the world stage.

Regarding Dr Weidel's statement that Hitler was a socialist, it should be noted that the NSDAP historically had a left-wing faction led by Gregor Strasser. Hitler politically sidelined this left-wing faction and had Strasser murdered, along with many other critics and individuals he found undesirable. The crimes and atrocities committed by German Nazi forces have left their marks worldwide, but representatives and supporters of the AfD trivialise and disparage the Nazi era as a mere "speck of bird poop" or even "flyspeck."

The AfD has now identified the United States, which has contributed to stability in Europe for eighty years, as its opponent, yet it wants to "reestablish ties" with Putin, claiming that Germany supposedly has an interest in cooperating with Russia.

In the former GDR, under Russian rule, the population owned nothing and could hardly buy anything. If bananas were available somewhere, long lines would immediately form in the hope of getting some of the coveted fruit. People were not allowed to express their opinions, were controlled, spied on, and imprisoned. A single critical remark against the regime sufficed.

Russia itself has neither a tradition of democracy nor freedom of speech, let alone freedom of information. On the contrary, unwanted individuals are swiftly and ruthlessly eliminated, as various attacks have proven. Who would want such conditions in their own country?

The supposed protection of Russian parts of the population in Ukraine appears to be a mere pretext when considering that Russia would greatly benefit from a land route to Crimea as well as the fact that various natural resources are located in the contested region. A "head-in-the-sand attitude”, i.e. staying neutral and keeping out of it, would not work if Russia were to pursue expansionist plans and the "reclamation" of countries that have separated from Russia for good reasons. Should Russian soldiers reach the border to Poland, we would immediately find ourselves in a very difficult situation. Let us, once again, look to history to understand why this poses a serious threat to our peace and stability even today.

Some time ago, German social media users joked that the AfD had two wings: one for the German Reich and one for rich Germans (reiche Deutsche). Indeed, it is unlikely that the AfD aims to solve the problems of the "common man." Instead, their shrill rhetoric focuses on the planned deportation of people the AfD considers to be "foreigners." As a result, some loyal AfD voters may well end up disappointed while Germany will lose its reputation for good.

By now, we have fully entered the globalised world and need economical partners worldwide. To what extent is this compatible with AfD plans to leave the euro and the EU?

Similarly, voters in the United States assumed that Trump would "fix everything", something he neither did in his last term nor will do in this one. Julian Assange, for example, was pardoned by Biden.

Trump, meanwhile, does not even rule out a military "intervention" against a NATO country. These are bad news for peace and stability in Europe.

Our problems are not (economic) refugees in Germany. We are quite well-off, economically. The issue of refugees and orderly immigration can be addressed by the next government in a factual manner. Our problem does also not include the "windmills of shame," as Weidel put it, referring to wind power.

Our acute and most urgent problem is right-wing populist parties, whose policies could lead to the loss of our freedom, stability, prosperity, achievements, our reputation, and possibly even our peace. That is what matters now!

And regarding electric cars, in his campaign on "X", Musk has apparently missed the point that the AfD is planning on reversing the use of renewable energy.

My Juist

We are from the supposedly badly-behaved "North Rhine-Vandalia" though we certainly don’t like to be associated with vandals. Along with the general stresses of life away from Juist, we almost always bring a good dose of travel stress, which intensifies with each minute of Deutsche Bahn delays. After all, catching the ferry to Juist is crucial! Just five minutes left, and the ferry will depart! Hurry up!!! We dash around the corner, along with other travelers, dragging their suitcases behind them, and come upon the stoic staff of the Frisia ferry. "Should we board the ferry right away?" "No, please place your luggage in the carts first." Helpful hands lift large suitcases into the lower compartments of the cart and move smaller ones up a bit higher. Then we head through the building to the ferry. Although, as of recently, you have to go to the counter in Norddeich first to receive your Töwercard (serving as ferry ticket and used for your visitor's tax), which will then open the gate to the ferry for you.

We made it! The luggage is stowed, and we step onto the ferry, a literal weight lifted off our shoulders. I mumble a "Moin" to the ferry crew, as is customary here in East Frisia. After such a long time, I get to say "Moin" again! The familiar sound of engines starts, and the ferry sets off. The skyline of Juist slowly approaches, although the ride takes time. Luckily, I’ve moved past the “missed-photo-phase.” Only when we’re really close to the island I still feel the need to take at least one photo. "Look, there’s the Kurhotel* again, the water tower, the Haus des Gastes*, and the Protestant church! And the Loog*!"

Feeling calm and relaxed, we stroll off the ship toward the carts to retrieve our luggage. Whether with or without a wheelbarrow, the path slightly slopes downward, practically pushing you into the village centre. Cheerful travelers are ahead and behind us, heading to their accommodations, while impatient islanders, staff and workmen on bicycles and with wheelbarrows whiz by, always in a rush.

During our first vacation on Juist, I was most captivated by the beach, the waves, and the shiny shells in the water. I could walk in the rolling waves towards the dogs' beach and beyond towards Wilhelmshöhe* for hours, lost in thoughts. I would make plans, reflect on ideas, and reset myself for life after our holidays. Soon, I found myself needing a notepad and pen from Poppinga. Preferring walks along the beach to sitting in a beach chair, I used those brief breaks to draft my first German island crime novel Töwercard ins Jenseits. (lit. Töwercard to the Afterlife). This was followed by a second crime novel, Der Töwerkunst-Coup (lit. The Töwer-Art Coup), as well as short stories and poems. Now, a third crime novel is in the works. I became interested in the island’s history and started collecting old books about Juist from antiquarian shops.

On the beach, I joined other vacationers in switching from shell-collecting to picking up rubbish. My most unusual finds were a bottle of Russian vodka, with Cyrillic writing that I could still decipher thanks to a year of Russian at university, a bottle of a well-known British dishwashing product, still labeled, and a tiny black address tag that a small dog had just lost in the North Sea waves. The beach chair renter at the Men's Beach, Mr. Wäcken, knew, after reading the address, which guest the dog belonged to. A more mundane find was painter’s masking tape from a paint job on a ship. For a while, the North Sea would even regularly deliver a plastic bag to use for collecting rubbish. I learnt that seaweed in the North Sea doesn’t just create foamy waves, as I already knew, but can sometimes resemble a container-load of lost toilet paper washing ashore. But it was a natural process, too, caused by algae.

Next, I focused on blue and orange fishing ropes, which I would unravel to make bracelets using Kumihimo braiding at home. In a workshop on Juist, I crafted another bracelet from cords from Behrends’ household shop, complete with an anchor clasp. In a second workshop, I made glass beads for the first time in my life. And in the evenings, while strolling through the village, we would look into the shop windows, pondering what to buy next and what we already owned. A baseball cap with the word "Juist" written on it was a must-have. It immediately signals that we’re not headed for Norderney. Our second regular stop was always Behrends’ household applicances.

My training as an herbal educator led me to gather herbs and berries on the island for my breakfast drink, but always just a little. Two or three plantain or yarrow leaves, four sea buckthorn berries, or a single rosehip. I noticed that the immune-boosting chickweed, which grows in every flower box at home, couldn’t be found on the island.

As a vacationer, one makes a list of activities to complete in the short time one has. This includes the visit of specific places or restaurants. Unfortunately, the weather sometimes thwarts one’s plans any which way, and time flies by so quickly that you never get through everything you had planned. But that’s okay — there’s always next time. Or the time after that.

Inevitably, the last day approaches, and with it sorrowfulness. It gets truly uncomfortable, a stark contrast to the beginning of the vacation when you first set foot on the island. One last walk in the waves at the beach. Then into the shower, washing Juist right out of your hair and off your body, along with the sunscreen. One final walk through the village to say goodbye to the shopkeepers you’ve been buying from for years. They remain indifferent, after all, they don’t have to leave the island. But we do!

When we took care of cleaning the vacation apartment ourselves, I would hoover the carpets thoroughly, dust the tops and insides of cabinets, clean every nook and cranny, wipe down cabinet fronts and handles, and polish bathroom fixtures and mirrors. Yet, my efforts weren’t appreciated much by one landlord. "Our apartments are always clean," he reprimanded me.

Yet, even when the landlord would send cleaning staff to the apartments, you didn't want to leave the impression with your Juist hosts that you were excessively crumby at breakfast, that black socks had left lint all over the carpet, that you brought half the beach back with you, or that toothpaste had splattered the bathroom tiles during tooth-brushing. So, the worst faux pas are tidied up anyway, and the now-downgraded dishrag is folded and placed on the rim of the cleaning bucket.

Then you have to get packed. On departure day, the luggage is always much heavier than it was on the way there. How did that happen? Books from the Koch bookshop, whisky from Poppinga, a gift for the lovely neighbor who took care of the mail, items from the new household shop "Schrauben & Gedöns," jam from Sanddornstübchen, or beer that you can’t possibly get back home, shower gel and shampoo, and perhaps clothing you bought "over there." A bit of sand and some shells, just in case you feel like doing some Juist-themed crafting in the winter. I’m toying with the idea of making a Juist ring out of sand and shell fragments. Now I probably have enough material for a hundred rings. No wonder, really. And, as a final bonus, you get to haul your luggage uphill on the way to the harbor. How unfair! Endure the Biscaya melody as Juist fades into the distance. Blow my nose! Damn it, why can’t I leave the island like a grown-up just once! Time for a quick Tote Tante!

Back home, our apartment feels just like an outpost of Juist. Juist and sea-related themes are present in almost every room. A seascape painted by "Karsten," which we bought from the Mindermann gallery on Juist years ago, hangs on a living room wall. For major soccer events, I hoist the Juist flag on the balcony, much to the neighbors' amusement. The only thing missing, of course, is the sea, which has been replaced by the Rhine in Cologne.

When you’re not on Juist—and most of the time, you’re not—you still stay closely connected to your favorite island these days, thanks to social media. Islanders post their photos, vacationers do the same, and everyone shares what’s happening. We worry when a storm surge threatens, follow the events and debates on the island, anxiously await news after an accident at sea, and mourn when someone we had frequently met for many years passes away. My own grief, when taken to the island, was consoled as the wind simply passed through me and blew away my sadness. In this way, Juist’s locals and their guests remain connected throughout the year like a community of fate. And I stayed on Juist in my thoughts for an entire year, without paying vacation rental or tourist tax, while writing my first Juist crime novel.

The German Bundestag was more crowded than usually, when important topics were being debated. An MP of the Conservative Party (CDU) declared in a heated debate that the governing Ampel coalition's plan to legalise hemp to a limited extent was "utter nonsense." The Minister of Health (Social Democrats, SPD) retorted that was not an argument. The leader of the right-wing populist party (AfD) ranted against the government's plans. In a TV discussion, the governor of Bavaria stated that "hemp" had no place in "his Bavaria."

Even the non-flowering hemp plant on the windowsill, balcony, or in the garden has always been associated with cannabis, and was regularly, amidst laughter and mockery, a matter for the police, even if it may have innocently grown from birdseed.

Corresponding press reports thus ignored the diverse applications that hemp offers. Historically, hemp has been used to make banknotes and fabrics for sailing ships. The term "hemp rope" is still familiar to older generations. Hemp fibers can be used to produce environmentally friendly clothing, paper, and cellulose (e.g., toilet paper and kitchen paper). It can replace plastic products and help preserve forests.

Hemp is an effective insulation material in construction; it is fireproof, resistant to mold and moisture, especially considering that we have already seen houses insulated with combustible materials like glass wool, foam glass, expanded clay, mineral foam, or rock wool go up in flames.

In healthcare, CBD or THC can contribute to the relief or treatment of various diseases. These products could now become more affordable.

Consumption of industrial hemp, with low concentrations of THC, and its seeds is healthy. Hemp seeds have a pleasant nut-like taste and contain polyunsaturated fatty acids (Omega-3 and Omega-6), vitamins A, B, C, D, and E, all essential amino acids, and antioxidants.

Hemp leaves contain secondary plant substances and terpenes. However, bitter substances make products like hemp milk less tasty. Adding one or two leaves of industrial hemp to a smoothie with other vegetables/fruits is easily manageable, as the taste will then balance out.

In agriculture, hemp is considered a good preceding crop, suppressing weeds, and its root system loosens the soil. It also provides food for a variety of bee species and butterflies and could also be used as biofuel.

Hemp (Cannabis sativa) is diocious, meaning there are separate male and female plants. THC is predominantly concentrated in the flowering parts of female plants, especially in varieties with high THC concentrations. Later, the flowers develop into seeds. However, to pollinate female flowers by wind or insects, simultaneous cultivation of male plants is essential. Without both, no cannabis can be harvested in the long term, and no seeds can be obtained.

Leaves and male plants have low THC concentrations, and stems and seeds have practically none. If you simply plant a hemp seed of a low-THC variety (industrial hemp) and consume the seedling or individual leaves of the young plant promptly, you will not harvest any cannabis and will have next to nothing to do with THC. Yet, you can benefit from the nutrients. Alternatively, you could plant two female and one male industrial hemp plant and later consume not only the leaves but also the seeds. Since these plants can grow over four metres tall, I would opt for buying industrial hemp seeds and consuming the leaves of the non-flowering young plants.

In conclusion, hemp is versatile when used properly, even without the desire to "get high." Decriminalisation of general hemp cultivation has long been overdue! Now, consumers just need to be offered seeds with reliable information on the THC concentrations.

Word is going round that AI can do anything faster and better than any human and is also much cleverer than we could ever be, and it was all super simple to use AI. So I got curious and put a few AI platforms to the test.

I asked ChatGPT to write me a Christmas poem, only stipulating the number of verses.

Let me know if you want me to publish this as my next Christmas poem. Aside from "unbound", which seems to a a favourite AI word, and some forced rhymes and mistakes, the poem lacks meaning. How do we define meaning? How does AI define meaning? We are spiritual beings with feelings, something that is entirely alien to AI. Therefore, AI cannot describe properly or put in rhymes how we feel about Christmas and what it means for us.

Incidentally, I requested another AI to write a Christmas poem, too, and it came up with a very similar result.

I then requested ChatGPT to write more poems, this time on nature, among other, and found that some rhymes, expressions or ideas were usable but between 80 and 90% were not. They just did not match what I had in mind. If you have no idea at all, AI may be useful to get you started.

Someone suggested, I should ask it to write an outline for a Shakespearean play, and it came up with a storyline resembling a mix of plays that already exist.

It composed a hilarious article on the City of Cologne that was reported on in a newspaper, claiming there was a vinyard around the Cathedral that yielded 600 bottles of wine every year and there were gnomes living under the Hohenzollernbrücke, a bridge next to the railway station.

In medieval times there used to be a fruit orchard next to the Cathedral, and there is the legend of the Heinzelmännchen (gnomes) in Cologne that, once upon a time, would do all the work for Colognians until the Miller's wife got curious and strew peas on the stairs because she wanted to take a look at the gnomes. They tumbled down the stairs, thereby feeling humiliated, and left for good. The poem was written by August Kopisch.

I still like ChatGPT because it had a few ideas I could use.

Tutor AI

To test this tutoring platform, I asked the AI to tell me about the Flamenco. The AI compiled a few modules, including the roots, the gypsy history, musical and dance elements, and concluded that Flamenco also incorporated other musical elements nowadays. So far so good.

Back in the day, I wrote my BA thesis on the flamenco, and the AI failed to mention that there is a conflict between the gitanos (gypsies) and the payos (any Spaniard who is not a gypsy). The gitanos claim that they are the only ones who play and dance the real flamenco while the flamenco of the payos was just for tourists. This aspect was obviously part of my thesis, and my sources were two humans with conflicting opinions that I interviewed.

From text to picture

I requested two AI platforms to develop a few pictures for me.

1. Draw an outline of the island of Juist, view from above.

2. Five sails on waves (with beach in the background)

3. A couple on the beach with a sunset.

You find the pictures that were generated in the gallery.

1. I know I am mean asking a US-American AI to draw an outline of a small German holiday island. But then there is the internet and all that ... The AI was unable to give me a correct outline of the island. The first was ridiculous, with a lot of steep green hills. I liked another attempt that did not give me the correct outline either but somehow included the name Juist as lines in the drawing. ChatGPT actually suggested I should use Google maps and draw the outline of the island myself.

2. Apparently, AI cannot count to five. The results were not so bad though, and one or two could make nice pictures on a bag or a t-shirt.

3. The couples have absolutely chilling faces. In one picture the woman's head is very strangely twisted as is the depiction of legs and feet in general. A cartoon version shows a man and a woman with three legs respectively as a third lower leg grows out of their knees.

I cannot imagine what would happen if you asked AI to illustrate a children's book. I know some people have done that but the quality of the book regarding illustration and content won't compare to that of an actual writer, if written by AI.

The internet will now be filled with AI-generated texts and pictures. The question is, will they be useful or just a lot of spam?

As a conclusion I would like to suggest to use AI as ONE source of information only and always cross-reference results with other information sources such as human beings, books and the general internet to get a broader picture. Don't leave it all up to AI; still learn to increase your own knowlege. Always double-check everything that AI has written for accuracy.

Water is Life

The 1,172-mile Dakota Access pipeline (DAPL) is a $3.7bn project, designed to transport 470,000 barrels of crude oil per day from the Bakken oil field in North Dakota to a refinery in Patoka, Illinois, near Chicago. It crosses the Missouri River and brooks within miles of the reservation of the Standing Rock Sioux that the tribe rely on for drinking water. Fearing that pipeline leaks may contaminate the water, the Native Americans attempted to stop the construction of the pipeline running across their sacred lands. Water is Life!

In 2016, the Sioux set up a protest camp at Standing Rock and were joined by other US-citizens. The tribe insisted that everybody remain peaceful and unarmed to prevent conflict. The water protectors on the one side were antagonized by the Dakota police force on the other, led by Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier, who decided to fight the activists with so-called non lethal weapons which included rubber bullets and water guns, despite low temperatures.

As the protestors stood their ground and held out at Standing Rock, their quest reached the mainstream of society when several public persons and actors joined ranks with the protestors. Jane Fonda called for the general public to divest their money from banks that were financing DAPL and did so herself, with good publicity.

While at the camp, activist Sophia Wilansky, who was 21 years old at the time, was suddenly hit by a projectile which severely crippeled her left arm. It was alleged later that the procectile had been a concussion grenade, fired at the protestors by police. After this incident, the Sioux gave up the camp and sent everybody home. President Obama discontinued the construction of the pipeline a mere few days before his last term as President of the United States would come to an end.

His successor, President Trump, immediately ordered that DAPL take up operations. This was interrupted once more, when a judge ruled that no proper environmental expertise had been compiled, and the pipeline was shut down. Lawsuits of the water protectors against the police force are still ongoing although some were lost.

The saying „Water is Life“ has become well-known throughout the world.

Today, I found a gingko leaf on the pavement. I still have to find the tree it came from, since it wasn’t located in the vicinity.

My find took me down memory lane, to a trip to Weimar many moons ago and to Goethe and the ginkgo tree.

Goethe was fascinated by this tree that had been brought to Germany from China and was imputed with great healing powers. He viewed the shape of its leaves as a symbol of love and friendship and, aged 66, dedicated a love poem to young Marianne von Willemer.

Hedgehogs in Distress

Initial care

It is best to compile a list of rescues and shelters for various wild animals when there is no emergency so you can react instantly and contact someone quickly when there is one.

The aim is to hand any animal that’s injured or emaciated over to an experienced wildlife rescue or rehabber as swiftly as possible to give the animal a fighting chance for survival or at least look after the animal following their advice.

1. When you find a hedgehog in distress, take it inside and keep it inside your home in a fly-proof manner. Your first priority should be to look for fly eggs and maggots stuck on the outside or hidden in the hedgehog’s fur and all openings of the hedghog’s body. If they hatch, they can eat a hedgehog up alive in merely a matter of hours. Avoid at all cost to try to rinse eggs and maggots out of the hedgehog using water as that will only flush eggs and maggots deeper into the hog’s fur and all body openings, including the eyes. That is why you also can’t apply warmth to a hedgehog unless you are sure that all eggs and maggots are gone. Warmth makes the flies hatch more quickly.

You comb only in one direction, using a mascara or tooth brush or a lice comb. A lice comb is actually very good to remove eggs hidden in the fur. See the video by Schäfer Wildlife Rescue below.

2. After you have convinced yourself that there are no more eggs on the hedgehog, you can place it in a cardboard or curver box, high enough so the animal can’t break out. Place some newspaper on the bottom of the box, add a smaller box as a house, a towel with no loops and a hot water bottle or PET bottel filled with luke-warm water. Make sure the hog can still move away from the heat source. Change the water when it becomes cool as cool water would harm the hedgehog that needs to warm up.

Do not place kitchen paper towels in the makeshift home of the hedgehog. It may start nibbling away at those and get bowel occlusion as a consequence. Also, don’t use straw, hay or saw chips at this point as the former may wrap itself around the hedghog and the latter may cause it to inhale saw dust. Such bedding is also disadvantageous for hygienic reasons.

3. Once the hedgehog is warm (check its tummy), you can offer water and just a little cat food without any gravy as gravy would cause diarrhea. For small hedgehogs you can dilute a very small quantity food with a little with fennel tea. You can also offer some scrammbled egg without salt or spices, very slightly fried so it’s still liquid. Very small hedgehogs require a specific milk replacer formula, NOT COW’S MILK!

By now you have hopefully contacted someone because the hedgehog may very well have internal parasites that it gets specifically from eating snails out of desperation because there aren’t enough insects available anymore. It will need medication for that. The vet can give the hog a prophylactic treatment against gut parasites and lungworms. All other parasites need to be analysed first. This is done by collecting some of the hog’s faeces and sending them to a lab for analysis. Once it is known what the hog is suffering from, targeted treatment can be given.

Do NOT use spot-on on hedgehogs against fleas or parasites. It kills them! Hedgehogs and other wild animals can only be treated with certain medicinal products. Not every vet is aware of this, so it’s best to talk to a rescue first so they can direct you towards a vet that does know. It’s normal, to some degree, that fleas live on hedgehogs. If you want to get rid of them, you can take a brush and some oil and apply the oil to the hog to kill fleas. Do not suffocate any ticks. Ticks should be removed mechanically. Fleas on hedgehogs are not a priority. Hedgehogs can only be bathed for medical reasons, for example with a specfic shampoo if they suffer from mites.

Intensive-care patients will need infusions or may have terrible injuries due to flies, mowers or gardening utensils. Please take care when gardening and don’t use automatic mowers, especially not at night. Instead, create natural structures, set up hedgehog houses and provide additional food for hedgehogs in your garden.

Antiviral Medical Products and Natural Remedies

Antiviral mouthwashes (disinfection of the oral mucosa): These have repeatedly been talked about by German medical hygiene specialist, Prof Klaus-Dieter Zastrow, who, at one time in his professional career, acted as consultant of the German Government. Prof Zastrow stated that the corona virus initially multiplied in the mouth before moving on to the lungs. Therefore, the viral load could easily be reduced by using iodine-based disinfectants such as Betaisodona. Also, even if you were infected, you would not give the virus to anybody in the next three hours since your viral load would be too low. Viruses were only spread via the mouth and not when you calmly breathed in and out through your nose while keeping your mouth shut. A low viral load would still help your immune system get to know and fight the virus while reducing your risk.

Another product that dentists use is called Linola sept. Linola sept coats viruses in your mouth so they cannot attach themselves to your cells. The idea is the same; they want to prevent the spread of corona viruses while treating their patients. Ask your dentist what they do to keep corona viruses from spreading while treating their patients.

Pascoleucyn

This old, well-established homeopathic complex remedy tricks the body into believing that the poison of the bushmaster snake is in the body (in a low but safe potency). The body then begins to activate antibodies against the presumed poison, which happen to be the same ones required to fight viruses. In addition, the remedy contains echinacea in a low potency and therefore is very useful to fight viruses right from the beginning if you can’t see a classical homeopath. The drops contain alcohol, the tablets don’t.

Medicinal Herbs

Since you want to take the homeopathic drops or tablets several times per day, you can easily combine them with medicinal herbs that would, in other circumstances, cancel the effects of a homeopathic remedy. You can use medicinal antiviral herbs for inhalation or mix them for a tea, with some lemon juice, which actually tastes good.

Hashimoto's, Iodine, Natural Hormones, Probiotics

In most cases, Hashimoto’s patients merely receive synthetic T4 thyroid tablets (levothyroxine), just because someone had decided at some point that this would fully work for patients. A healthy thyroid makes T4, T3, T2 and T1 hormones. We know that T3 ist responsible for fat burning. It is still somewhat unknown what T2 and T1 do.

Patients who don’t have any major thyroid problems may make do with T4.

All other patients will be too tired to fully live their lives and will relentlessly gain weight, no matter how healthy their diet is or whether they eat much at all. The second advice that Hashimoto’s patients frequently get is to avoid iodine at all costs. This is the case with Graves‘ disease, although these patients also require some iodine.

Iodine

Iodine is vital for the body and the thyroid since triiodothyronine

(T3), aside from the protein tyrosine, contains three iodine atoms, and thyroxine four (T4).

A functional deficiency of the thyroid, such as with Hashimoto’s, has severe consequences for the health of the body and affects bone formation and the metabolism. Iodine is also important for the healthy development of a fetus in the mother’s womb.

Iodine is always iodine, with no difference. There is no such thing as „organic“ iodine. Natural salts, such as stone or sea salt or algae, however, contain further minerals that are no longer present in refined salt to which iodine was added artificially. Yet, the natural iodine content of natural salts and algae varies with the product and origin.

After I had been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 2006, my hair fell out.

My hairdresser remarked that my hair looked like little mouse tails. I was shocked since I had always had thick and strong hair. Then I came upon the book below (in German, on Hashimoto’s and the need for iodine) and started taking lugol solution. It consists of pure iodine and, as an advantage, you can take the same exact dosis regularly. I would always add my drops to some organic carrot juice and two teaspoons of brine, made with stone salt. Today, my hair is thick again and my hairdresser is no longer complaining. :)

Natural Thyroid Hormones

A bigger problem was/is my weight that has accumulated as a burden during the years I took T4 medication, even if I ate very little. It went like this. Me: ‚I think I’m hungry‘. Then I would eat something. My body: ‚Oh no! Food?! What the hell am I to do with that? I think it’s best to stuff the calories into the thighs. Man, am I exhausted, I simply have no energy‘. That’s how crazy it was!

I remember begging an endocrinologist to prescribe at least a T4/T3 combination product, just to try it. A while later, I was looking for a medical doctor who would prescribe natural thyroid hormones for me. She said that‚ trials had shown that the exact quantitiy of these hormones could not be measured.‘ Fun fact: It was a research result from the 1980s. Nowadays, we can indeed measure the exact quantity of natural hormones and make them for patients. And every medical doctor will go merely for T4, because, allegedly, that is sufficient. When I asked a medical doctor about my weight gain – she had known me before when I had been slender – she assumed it was because I was a woman and not because I had considerable difficulties with the artificial T4 that caused a massive undersupply of vital hormones.

It is true though that the adjustment of natural thyroid hormones for a patient takes quite a while. The beginning of menopause requires another readjustment (info from endocrinologist). Yet, with rigorous dietary instructions and sports, I did manage to lose one kilogram in one and a half weeks, respectively. My instructions were as follows: no sugar (including, logically, no alcohol), no fruit (because of the sugar), no grains, no milk and no fruit infusions. What remains if vegetables, fish, and, surprisingly, meat. One could drink herbal infusions as long as no homeopathic remedy is being used. If you are, then only water.

To support the thyroid, iodine, thyrosine, and selenium is needed. One can best cover thyrosine and selenium with food supplements. Thyrosine is found in peanuts and cheese, selenium in Brazil nuts.

Why is everybody ill?

Medical doctors never seem to ask themselves this question. You get your endocrinologist appointment after about six months, they test the blood and merely prescribe T4. How come that an illness that had been barely known in the 1980s affects some 50% of all women today?

There is a correlation I have found which may not cover the entire pattern of damage but that may still be interesting.

It is about glyphosate in our food. Prof Monika Krueger, microbiologist, and others have written that glyphosate removed health-promoting gut bacteria from our gut, leaving mainly harmful gut bacteria behind.

In that respect, she found massive health damage in cows. That said, Essen University Clinic concluded that unlisted ingredients in Roundup caused irreversible nerve damage.

The body requires selenium to protect itself from free radicals. For this purpose, selenium must be broken down into selenium methionine and selenocysteine, which requires health-promoting gut bacteria. It therefore makes sense to take probiotics, such as, for example, by Dr Wolz. It turned out that my antibodies against the thyroid were decreased. Perhaps, free radicals play a part with Hashimoto’s.

There is an ethical problem with natural thyroid hormones, though: They are made from slaughtered pigs and cleaned up. This could be resolved by making synthetic thyroid hormones with all required hormones. Or we could examine why Hashimoto’s numbers have surged.

The History of Homeopathy

The principle of similarity used in homeopathy was first mentioned in an ancient world mythical Greek tale.

At a later date, Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.) addressed it directly when he stated in the 5th century B.C.: "Through the like, disease is produced and through the application of the like, it is cured."

Ca. 1526/27, Paracelsus commented, in a similar statement: ... a poison in the body would be cured by a similar poison but the dosage is very important.

In the 19th century, during the lifetime of Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), doctors would cause great harm to their patients with absurd medical treatments which cost many a patient their lives, rather than curing them. What people, in fact, needed was better nutrition, living conditions and hygiene.

Hahnemann, a physician and chemist, turned his back on this kind of medicine and initially worked as a translator. In this occupation, he came across a paper written by William Cullum, a physician and pharmacologist from Scotland. Cullum had claimed that china bark, due to its bitter-tasting compound and astringent properties, would strengthen the stomach and cure malaria. Hahnemann undertook experiments on himself and other healthy people to test this seemingly erroneous hypothesis and was surprised to find that, having ingested china bark, his test persons and he himself developed malaria symptoms for a few hours. Thus, no astringent properties were responsible, but, instead, china bark itself had produced malaria symptoms in healthy persons that lasted for a short while before subsiding. He undertook further experiments along those lines, examining about 100 different substances.

Anton von Störck (1731-1803), a pychiatrist and contemporary of Hahnemann, lived in Vienna. He had noticed that one of his patients exhibited the same psychological symptoms as would occur if thorn apple were ingested. Could it then be used to reverse his patient's symptoms? He also undertook self-experiments with Stramonium (thorn apple), Hyoscyamus, Pulsatilla, Acontium, and others, and is considered a predecessor of Hahnemann.

Hahnemann quoted him in his own papers and, later, successfully treated a first psychiatric case according to Störcks' instructions.

However, there were tight limits set to homeopathic deliberations since all these original substances were toxic.

Hahnemann therefore began to dilute and succuss the mother tinctures. The dilution was intended to reduce the toxicity of substances. Succussion is a commonplace practice in chemistry to homogenise (evenly distribute) agents in a liquid. He found that by succussing the liquids following each dilution process, the effect of the respective agents was increased. Finally, he had diluted the remedies to such a high level that, in his opinion, they could no longer contain any molecules of the starting substance, and yet, the remedies still worked. He concluded: Water has a memory.

This sentence may seem poetic, but it is correct from a scientific point of view, as will be explained below.

Homeopathic remedies are predominantly plant and mineral remedies. There are some animal remedies and a few nosodes. All mother tinctures have some degree of toxicity.

Taking notes of the effects required a very precise observation of all physical and mental symptoms that appeared, which had be repeatable in experiments. In order to compile such information on symptoms, Hahnemann resorted to symptom descriptions of his physician colleagues that they would write after a patient had ingested a poisonous substance. Over the years, he also developed his miasma theory and began to assign remedies to different miasms.

Repeated homeopathic trials over the centuries allowed new repertories to be compiled and updated. Several students joined Hahnemann to learn from him, including physicians who originally only studied this healing method to expose it as charlatanry. Over the years, homeopathy continued to evolve. In the 1980s, the cancer miasm was added and homeopathic remedies assigned. New methods and remedies emerged, so that today, homeopathy has moved away from Hahnemann's teachings, unless we talk about classical homeopathy.

Homeopathy from today's point of view

Classical homeopathy always uses one single remedy at a time and is an individualised medicine. Each patient must therefore be repertorised with regard to their health status, physically and psychologically, with detailed symptoms and characteristics. All conventional medical diagnoses are included.

Nowadays, computer software or punched cards may be used for repertorisation, as the analysis is called. However, the experience of a classical homeopath is still indispensable with regard to the correct choice of the remedies. The miasms can help find the remedy, i.e. the homeopath designates the state of desease of the patient to the respective miasm and strives to reach a successively lower miasm through homeopathic treatment, so that symptoms are removed and not only suppressed.

Aside from classical homeopathy, there are various complex remedies available as well as individual remedies that are not listed in the repertories. A special mention needs to be made of Sankaran, a contemporary homeopath of our time, who added numerous new remedies to homeopathy and developed a new system of remedy finding and additional miasms.

Especially with chronic diseases, homeopathy has again and again proven its comprehensive and profound effectiveness, leaving conventional medicine far behind and restoring patients' health or at least providing great improvement of chronic health problems. In some cases, patients were able to live on even though doctors had advised them to settle their affairs because nothing more could be done for them. They were, in particular, cancer patients, whose cases were documented.

Why advice on homeopathic remedies on the Internet may not work

If you search the internet, you’ll find advice on homeopathic remedies for various diseases.

Even though the advice given may even, generally speaking, be correct, you may find that, if you buy one of these remedies, nothing happens at all!

The reason is that the advice given does not take into account your entire health situation, starting with your psyche. A remedy that does not match you in the best possible way may not work at all, because it is the wrong remedy.

As a rule of thumb, it is also important to keep in mind that substances such as mint, menthol, coffee, camphor, and medicinal plants can cancel the effects of homeopathic remedies. Don’t forget menthol in toothpastes and mint in shower gels.

After taking a homeopathic remedy, an initial aggravation reaciton may set in. Since the mid-1990s, when I started using homeopathy, I have never once experienced an aggravation reaction that was the same for two remedies. On the contrary, all remedies act differently and lead to significantly different aggravation reactions, some of which caused significant and clearly noticeable symptoms. On the other hand, my health problems were cured every time without exception, or in one case improved considerably.

What does the placebo-effect that everyone is talking about have to do with homeopathy?

The brief answer: Nothing at all.

The latest homeopathy research

Water has a memory or "And yet it moves!"

In the mid-1980s, Masaru Emoto conducted research on water crystals. Various waters, which he had collected from different places in Japan, were first photographed in the original, then shouted at and insulted and, on the other hand, spoken to with peaceful, loving words.

The water molecules, which were exposed to negative energy, developed disordered structures that appeared "ugly" to our human ethical perception, while the molecules, which were spoken to with loving words, always developed well-ordered, from our point of view "harmonious" and "beautiful" structures. While these experiments were not conclusive and, initially, have nothing to do with homeopathy, the results were interesting. Also bear in mind that, no crystal snowflake resembles another, as far as we know. Water is therefore "alive". Water molecules react actively.

In recent years, it has been demonstrated in various research facilities that high potencies of homeopathic remedies contained nanoparticles of the respective starting substances. This is due to the process of succussion after each dilution process, which causes the water molecules to behave differently than they would in a simple dilution. If one were to dilute a starting substance repeatedly, one would eventually end up with plain water that would have no homeopathic effect on the body.

It is only through succussion that the effect is created. Another research trial demonstrated the influence of homeopathic remedies on cells of the body. Homeopathy is also used for and works on plants.
