An Incident
As always, down the narrow chimney,
To put them under the Christmas tree,
Santa swiftly brings his gifts,
While from a nook someone catches a glimpse.
Then, far away, quite close to Glasgow,
His ear discerns a muffled meow,
In his coat pocket, moving around,
Little paws make a rustling sound.
“Oh, these pockets are just downright useless!”
His hand reaches down for the kitten, which hisses.
And, up his coat, she rushes to climb,
Onto his shoulder, in no time.
“The kitten could well fall into the deep,
And if I release my reins at this speed,
My sledge will run astray too.
What on earth am I to do?!”
Meanwhile, the feline breezily
Reaches for a cord, playfully,
Cowers down, then proceeds to jump
Onto Dasher’s back, with a thump.
At the next stop – and what a relief –
He rescues the cat from her naughty mischief
“I’ll soon take you back where you belong,
But for now, I think I can help you along.”
Into a gift box the kitten did leap,
And soon she blissfully fell asleep.
Santa continued at his own good pace,
Now unobstructed, from place to place.
“Bye now, little kitten from Cheshire’s Crewe,
This small coloured box new belongs to you.
But do heed my advice, my sweet little dear,
Just don’t do this again in the coming year!”
